G1 Settings, YouTube & Amazon MP3 Download video walkthrough

24 September 2008 - 13:52

At first glance the G1 settings menu doesn’t not seem to different from other devices. The items listed are Wireless, Call, Sounds & Display, Data Synchronization, Security & Location, applications, SD Card & Storage, Date & Time, Text and About Phone. The wireless section has options such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Mobile Network.

The menu layout is very easy to view Including a category name and brief description. To the right there are symbols that quickly tell you if an option is turned on or not. The “about” page includes a lot of detailed information about your device and usage including Battery Status, Battery Level, Signal Strength, Network and Kernel Version to name just a few.

The YouTube application is also very cleaned up and easy to read. While searching through videos the app displays a thumbnail, video title, length, brief description and rating. Videos seem to take a little longer than average to load, longer perhaps than you would expect; this could be more to do with the overworked 3G and WiFi networks in the demo area. On-screen navigation buttons are responsive and easy to use. While viewing the current video description, it also displays similar videos and video comments. You can browse through content by genre and featured videos.

When you open the music application it displays four large buttons: Artist, Album, Song and Playlist. Clicking Artist displays the different artists you have on your phone as well as how many songs you have by that particular artist. Click on an artist to drop down a menu of albums by that particular artist as well as a picture of the cover art associated with that album.

The G1’s equivalent to the iPhone’s iTunes application is Amazon MP3. It includes a very similar look and layout to that of Amazon.com made to fit a mobile handset. It is very simple, unlike iTunes. Song descriptions include the artist, album, song name rating and also album coverart. You can even preview a few seconds of the song to verify it is the right one.

  4. I am SOOOOO disappointed. I was expecting more of GOOGLE and especially I was expecting Google not to committ themselves to anyone to sell the phone, expecially not freaking TELEKOM. Nobody likes them and their sh***ty service. The IPHONE sales would EXPLODE if it was not sold in a Telekom-package. Can you imagine, they take the GOOGLE-phone in their sales-programm to safeguard APPLE’s interest???
    BIG MISTAKE, GOOGLE !!

The GPhone is here to bust the iPhone hype and to start a new trend in the mobile business; to bring back the control to the user through an open platform. So, it might seem odd that the first GPhone is limited to the T-Mobile carrier. Well, for Google to be successful in entering the cellphone domain, they needed a strong alliance with handset manufacturers, service providers, carriers, commercialization and even semiconductor companies. The “Open Handset Alliance” (openhandsetalliance.com) was formed and counts 34 such companies. The fact that the first GPhone is produced by HTC and is only offered through T-Mobile only gives a stronger incentive for the other alliance companies to compete and create a better alternative, while still using the Android platform. The consumer wins again. So if you think about it - what better carrier than T-Mobile to kick the knees of AT&T? Oh, you don’t want a carrier? Well, learn the reality of the handset business; without a plan an advanced handset like the HTC G1 would sell for so much more than the $179-$299 that it’s being offered through with the plan. Exactly how much is probably confidential, but I’m sure it’s a price that would keep the phone out of reach of the common people. And if there’s a thing that Google is dedicated to do, it’s providing it’s products to the common people… So, if you want Android but hate T-Mobile, just wait till after October 22nd; my bet is that it will take less than a week before the first G1s are offered unlocked for non T-Mobile users. Sure the unlocked phone will will cost more than $179, but I’m sure that there are T-Mobile users who do not need a G1 and therefore are using the opportunity to buy, unlock and sell the phone to earn some easy money. And after that it’s just a question of time before a new handset is offered through another carrier in the alliance - for example Sprint Nextel… I’m sure that Google as always know what they are doing and that we finally will get the iPhone knocked down from it’s pedestal.
