CES 2008: WNC demo Android-ready Linux smartphone

6 January 2008 - 7:17

Quiet times here at Google-Phone while we peruse the delights on show at CES 2008, but you can rest assured that we’ll be bringing you any developments relating to Android.  Just such a development is WNC’s GW4 open-source cellphone, currently rocking a generic version of mobile Linux 2.6, but with the processing power and corporate intention to run the Android OS.  Several people confirmed to us that the GW4 would be loaded up with Google’s cellphone platform later on in the year, making this one of the first publicly released Android-ready cellphones around.

So what’s in store from Wistron NeWeb Corp?  Well, a QWERTY smartphone with 2.5-inch QVGA touchscreen display, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera and incredibly light body.  Right now it’s compatible with Microsoft counterparts and has the full gamut of smartphone software, but it’ll be when Android is loaded that the GW4 really shines.

  1. Man it looks pretty cool. I would love to do a test drive in one of those

  2. I really think Google can do a lot better than this…especially with the iPhone, Motorola Rokr E8, Sony Ericsson W760, and the Nokia N95 out there…these phones are gorgeous and some great individual features. But you do have the open source thing going for ya…
