Google Phone’s Music Service?

I suppose it only makes sense that Google’s ever-reaching hand has finally scooped up a new deal pertaining to the one part of entertainment they didn’t have their claws in, music. Universal is the primary company in this deal, they are starting a new DRM-Free music service called gBox.

What relevance does this have to the gPhone? Well if I had to guess, such a deal is only a hop and a skip, no jump, to this being the service included on any Goophone. The deal doesn’t really get Google’s hands dirty with the music industry, its really just a giant advertising deal, but its still a partnership, and you can tell simply by the service’s name that Google’s hand is in it.

gBox could take off due simply to the lack of DRM, which means you can manipulate it however you want, and, once you buy the track, its yours, do with it what you want, within legal boundaries. Since the Google Phone’s handset and/or service is supposed to be ad-supported, a large chunk of the costs could be knocked out by Google offering exclusivity on it’s device to Universal. Just my thoughts though.

  1. I don’t think gBox is actually owned by Google; they just buy Google Ads. A lot of news sources reported that Google owns it or started it (or partnered with it, etc). A whois search and a cursory glance at gbox.com should confirm that.
