StarOffice and Google

StarOffice, the basis for OpenOffice, has recently been added to Google’s Pack. For those of you that may not have heard of the service, Google offers up a service that is extremely useful for system builders and new PC owners alike, its called “Google Pack”.

Google Pack

This service allows you to customize a single downloadable file that includes several programs that one would normally download separately. The Google branded services in Pack are Google Earth, Google Desktop, Google Talk, Picasa, Google Photos Screensaver, and Google Toolbar for IE. There is also Firefox (with, you guessed it, Google Toolbar), Norton Security Scan, Spyware Doctor, RealPlayer, Adobe Reader, Skype, and now StarOffice w/ Java.

I have no clue what this might mean for a Google contracted handset, but it’s a foot in the door to more functionality on such a device. It also shows that Google isn’t dead set on using only open source products. Especially since the main differences between StarOffice and OpenOffice are some of the proprietary software that is included in StarOffice that increase interoperability between it and MS Office.

StarOffice is available now from Sun for $70 or free from Google, take your pick.
